Postharvest Losses in Onion: Causes and Determinants

Reducing post-harvest loss is a reasonable step towards food security globally. However, the lack of deep knowledge causes and determinants postharvest poses great challenge to strategies for alleviating loss. This study, therefore, identifies drivers losses in onion, Nigeria, alleviate menace. Data collected from 360 farmers were analysed with descriptive statistics multiple regression model. Results showed that primary rot, diseases pests, drying bruises. While, poor storage facilities, transportation systems, long distances marketing centres, agricultural extension services inadequate credit secondary causes. The driving factors onion (β = -0.1269, p < .05), access -0.1054, household size -0.2650, .01), age farmer 0.0557, level education -1.0500, farm 0.3801, distance market 0.2187, output 0.1180, length after harvest 0.0635, .05). Therefore, this study recommends improved systems agrarian areas, overhauling services, making facilities available at affordable interest rates, developing efficient management technologies by research institutes.
